All about CLAT and CLAT 2025

 

Every year, 22 prominent National legal Universities (NLUs) and other institutions in India administer the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), a national entrance exam, to candidates for admission to their undergraduate and graduate legal programs. Details below

·         What is CLAT exam?

CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) is an entrance test that secures admission to the five-year undergraduate law program run by 24 NLU’s (National Law Universities) across India.

·         What are the courses that students can opt for once they have got the requisite scores in the CLAT exam?

Most of the NLU’s offer five B. A LLB Hons while some NLU’s offer BBA LLB Hons and B. Com LLB Hons also. Gandhinagar NLU for example offers - BA LLB Hons, BBA LLB Hons, BSc LLB Hons, BSW LLB Hons, BCom LLB Hons.

·         What are NLU’s and how are they run / administered?

National Law Universities are India’s premier and most prestigious law universities offering the highest level of legal professional education in India. The NLU’s offer integrated honours under-graduate 5-year law degrees to its students.

The NLU’s are administered under the aegis of Bar association of India and the High courts of India.

·         How many NLUs are there in India?

As of 2024, there are 24 NLUs in India. Among them, 3400 CLAT seats are distributed.

Most of the states (not all) have their own NLU.

NUALS (National University of Advanced Legal Studies) Cochin is the NLU in Kerala.

 What is CLAT consortium?

The NLU Consortium or the CLAT consortium was formed in 2018. The CLAT consortium functions as a joint grouping of and for all the 24 NLUs in India. All decisions regarding CLAT exams are taken by the Consortium.  

·         What is the eligibility to appear for CLAT?

45 % marks in plus two / 12th exam or its equivalent grade in case of candidates belonging to General / OBC / PWD / NRI / PIO, OCI categories.

40% marks or equivalent for candidates belonging to SC / ST categories.

·         Is there any upper age limit for CLAT?

No

·         Does CLAT take into consideration plus 2 grade or marks of the student?

No.

The CLAT consortium considers only a student’s CLAT score

 

·         When is the CLAT qualifying exam for CLAT 2025 academic year slated to happen?

The date as announced by the CLAT consortium is December 1st 2024.

Exam time and duration: 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm. 2 hours duration  

 Mode: Offline (pen marking on OMR -    Optical Mark Recognition)      

·         What is CLAT exam pattern and syllabus CLAT exam pattern and syllabus?

MCQ - Multiple Choice Questions, Objective type exam.    

 No of questions: 120

Score:

1 Mark for right answer

.25-mark deduction for wrong answer

No mark deduction for questions that are skipped.         

Total, there are five sections -

English, logical / critical reasoning, Legal reasoning, current affairs, mental ability

Type of questions- All sections are passage based. English, Logical and Legal sections place a high emphasis on English language and vocabulary.

Section-wise question distribution is approximately as follows (this may be subject to change and is the discretion of the Consortium): 

English Language Comprehension - 26 to 30 Questions (20 %)

Logical / Critical reasoning - 28 to 32 Questions (20 %)

Legal reasoning - 29 to 35 Questions (25 %)

Current affairs and general knowledge – 29 to 35 Questions (25 %)

Quantitate techniques – 12 to 14 Questions (10 %)

 

·         CLAT score and NLU admission- how does it happen?

There is no defined cut-off score for CLAT. Score of each aspirant will be considered on a comparative basis. 

Going by 2024 results, 90 marks was considered as the cut-off to secure a NLU seat.  This may vary year to year.

·         Is there a ranking for NLUs?  

Yes, the NLU’s are ranked by NIRF – National Institute of Ranking Framework. NIRF comes under the ministry of Education.

The top five NLU 2024 rankings are as follows-

1. NLSIU – Bangalore

2.NALSAR – Hyderabad

3.NLU – Jodhpur

4. NLU – Bhopal 

5. WBNUJS – Kolkata

·         Can a student select the NLU of his or her choice?

The student can give his or her preference in the CLAT application form. They will be given allotment or admission call letter purely based on their scores. 

·         Is there any interview and group discussion round for CLAT final selection?

No.

Only the CLAT score will be considered.

·         When is the CLAT result released?

Normally, 2 to 3 weeks after the exam. So, CLAT 2025 test results should be declared maximum by 3rd week of December 2024.

Consortium releases the answer key within 48 hours of the exam.
