Repeating KLEE and LLB Coaching
In today’s blog, we will discuss whether to repeat the Kerala Law Entrance Exam (KLEE) or not. The question is prime on every KLEE taker’s mind as results have been announced (June 19th, 2025) and the allotment process is ongoing. Some doubts that persist but only naturally, includes –
Is it worth repeating KLEE?
Should I join a self-financing law college?
Is it a good academic move to join a government law college?
First, let us look at things from a simplistic perspective. There is nothing wrong in taking repetition for a competitive exam. This goes true for every competitive exam in India including crowd puller ones like NEET and JEE. A sizeable number of entrance exam takers in India fail to get through in their first attempt. Out of this many would have taken a year’s academic break to clear their respective entrance test. Nothing wrong in trying again. There is no need to have a mental block over that.
If we are keen to be lawyers, then of course we should pursue that dream to a realistic end. We have given time and dedication and built up a foundation. Maybe a little more push will capitulate us to a high level.
Perhaps a seat in the most preferred college. That’s simply great!
Self-financing colleges: Let us put things very straight. Nothing against anybody. But one cannot sidestep the financial aspect of any academic course.
Any self-financing LLB college will charge a hefty amount at the entry level itself and then additional payments like course fees, exam fees etc. For the first semester itself, a lac plus is the minimum amount that you will have to shell out. That continues for the next 4 years. Is it not pinching? Certainly yes.
Why not consider the option of joining a premier / merit based / govt college at the bare minimum fees? Why not start your career with bare minimum burden to yourself or your family members?
Secondly while pursuing your academic career, which should have more weightage – the course or the institute? This is a common question.
No two ways about it, the institute of course. Many aspirants think it is the course. But that is not so.
To take an example – suppose you were joining an MBA programme. What do you look into first and foremost? Of course, the level of the institute. A higher ranked or premier institute / college ensures higher level of placements. Such colleges also give you better language and other exposures.
Now coming back to LLB exams. Let us get one thing straight t. LLB does not centre just around KLEE. If there are coaching institutes who have projected like this, obviously they have not counselled you properly. There are many exams – State (Kerala) level and Pan-India level that comes before KLEE. Within Kerala, CUSAT 5 Year LLB exams are notified in March and takes place in May. Then we have exams like AMU, JMI, Maharashtra State Entrance (MHCET) that also takes place in May end -June. For three-year LLB students Delhi University (DU) holds its exams around the same time. In fact, KLEE is the last exam that comes in chronological order.
What we are aiming to say is that all these exams give an entry into premier institutes / colleges of Kerala / India. So, a re-attempt at KLEE might actually turn into a sure ticket into one of these colleges. One more year is certainly worth that wait.
As far is time lag is concerned, CUSAT is a bright spot. Its exams are the first to conducted and its admission process also starts by June end. So, the time lag with the last LLB exam of the previous year gets considerably reduced.
Now the most important thing. The graduate-degree course is of four-year duration in all colleges. At the same time an LLB course after plus two is of five-years. And what you get in hand is an integrated degree like BBA-LLB, B. Com-LLB, BA-LLB. So basically, in one more year you acquire a professional degree in two courses. Which one is worth it? Of course, if graduation was of three-year duration, then there is still an advantage but in four years…. Just think!
One more suggestion is that if finally, you have decided to go for repeat coaching, then always go for a regular course. Something in which you can dedicate 4 to five hours in a day. Anyhow you have set aside one year of your life so don’t compromise with a part-time course.
